FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

How does IPL Lumecca work?

Each treatment takes about 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area. First, you’ll wear protective goggles. Then a cooling gel is placed on the skin before moving the handpiece across the targeted area.

During treatment there will be a bright flash of light from the Lumecca handpiece, and a sensation on your skin that feels like a light snap from an elastic band. Redness and a slight warming of the skin are normal after treatment and usually subside within an hour. Over the next 24-48 hours you may see a darkening of pigmented lesions flake off, leading to an evening out of skin tone. After treating vascular lesions you may see the vein blanch and disappear or a colour change in vessel which dissipates after a few days.

Pre/post Treatment Advice
  • No intense sun exposure 3 weeks pre and post your IPL treatment.
  • No sunbed usage

Aftercare Advice
  • Pigmented lesions will become darker for a period of 1-2 weeks before starting to lighten.
  • Local inflammation around the lesions, manifested as some redness and swelling may accompany the response, as part of the healing process.
  • Blood capillaries will clot and appear darker for 1-2 weeks before disintegration.
  • Some skin tightening may occur immediately, which may decline for 1-2 months, but will improve then, as new collagen fibers are produced.
  • No complete clearance is guaranteed.
  • Treatment requires a number of sessions. Exact number of sessions is individual.
  • There may be some discomfort and transient redness and/or swelling associated with treatment.
  • The possible side effects of the treatment include: local pain, skin redness (erythema), swelling (edema), damage to the natural skin texture (crust, blister, burn), change of pigmentation (hyper- or hypo-pigmentation), and scarring.
  • Although these effects are rare and expected to be temporary, any adverse reaction should be reported immediately.
  • Wear SPF 50 daily and remember to reapply throughout the day.
  • Make-up can be reapplied the day following your treatment.
